Plunge Into the Silver Sea
Freezing for a Reason!

by Kris Scharp

On the wintery, windy Chicago morning on the 3rd of March 2007, I participated in the Polar Plunge to benefit Special Olympics Illinois. The water of Lake Michigan was dark, tempestuous and cold. 174 other plungers and myself, braved the elements to raise money for the inspiring young athletes involved in Special Olympics. Our event at Lake Bluff raised $87,000, with $1325 coming from the generous donations of those who supported me. Thank you for sharing in this event.

Kris Jumping in the Freezing Waters The Polar Plunge was a great experience, despite losing a shoe and a pint of blood. And I did it TWICE! Ok, I found my shoe and didn't lose quit a pint, but the EMT was cute who bandaged my knee. I lost a water shoe momentarily when I hit the water and my foot sank into the sand at the same time a wave hit me, and I went over, skinning my knee on the rocks, which I didn't realize until later. After a short swim I found my shoe floating on the water on the way back to the beach. Later, after getting to my friends house, we discovered the video chip was full and it did not capture me taking the plunge. We had tons of pictures, but I wanted a video so bad, we went back to the beach and I did it AGAIN. And guess what? I still can't get the video to download to my computer, so you will have to wait to see it.

Again, thank you to everyone who supported me with well wishes, shirts and donations. I want to especially thank Méav for the inspiration and encouragement. And next year I may do the SUPER PLUNGE, one plunge every hour, for 24 hours.
